9/22/24, 10:30am - 12:30pm

Embark on a sensory journey of Whatcom County’s blossoms as you delve into the world of honey and pollen tasting with Buzz & Bloom‘s expert beekeeper, Nai’a. This class offers a unique opportunity to explore the intricate relationship between bees and their floral surroundings while gaining insights into bee biology, nectar and pollen mapping, and the art of honey and pollen tasting.

The class begins with an introduction to bee biology and the fascinating process of nectar and pollen collection. Through interactive discussions and visual aids, students will learn how bees transform floral nectar and pollen into honey and nutrient-rich pollen pockets, as well as learning about ways that beekeepers collect these bee products while maintaining health in beehives. Participants will experience a guided tasting journey, sampling an array of honey and pollen varieties harvested from Buzz & Bloom’s five bee yards located in farms and backyard gardens around Whatcom County. Students will learn how to properly taste and assess honey and pollen, identifying tasting notes, aromas, and subtle nuances indicative of different plant sources. They will also learn how to identify pollens in honey under a microscope and learn about Buzz & Bloom’s honey tracking & labeling process. Everyone will go home with an array of small honey jars and local bee pollen.

Nai’a brings five years of local beekeeping expertise, coupled with a certification as a Master Beekeeper from the University of Montana’s esteemed program. Passionate about nature’s intricate connections, she revels in nurturing her bees and exploring the symbiotic relationship between plants and pollinators. With a background in herbalism, gardening, and an affinity for outdoor adventures, Nai’a eagerly shares her knowledge amidst the stunning landscapes of Whatcom County, fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world among her students.
